Most people expect a coach to motivate them. I’d rather make them uncomfortable.
A client once came to me wanting to get fit. His routine said otherwise. So I asked him one question: “If nothing changes today, where will you be a month from now? And what are you going to do about it?”
Then I said nothing.
No advice. No pep talk. Just silence, and space for him to sit with his own answer.
That’s when it hit him, not because I told him, but because he saw it himself.
This is what real coaching looks like. Not answers handed over. A mirror held up, and enough silence for the truth to show.
The best question isn’t the one you answer. It’s the one that won’t let you look away.
